CHAPTER 15

Despite his parting words the day before, Commander Montgomery wasn’t able to meet with David beyond a cursory greeting that morning. Which was just as well, since Carver’s lewd suggestions about the man had lingered far longer than they should have. After three years of rigid celibacy and the six before that as Robin’s willing subject, David wasn’t used to his own turn-ons. He never would have considered Montgomery before this. But what he’d said to Carver was true. He did have a thing for older men. And Montgomery had a number of other factors in his favor.

Thanks a lot, Carver.

“The tan really suits him.”

David almost dropped the coffee he’d been pouring. He glared

at the all-too-innocent-looking Scotty standing beside him. No response was the best response.

“You’ve been watching him like you used to watch Carver.” Well…fuck. “Any new developments on the McAndrews’

case?” He prayed it would deflect her. God damn Carver and his goddamn suggestions. Scotty smiled slyly, but let it drop. “Maybe. We’ve had guys watching that truck since Carver ID’d it. It’s been once to an apartment complex on Arlington and twice to a very nice townhouse in Squirrel Hill.” She handed him surveillance photos.

Nice was an understatement. David lived in a nice house. This was elaborate, all done in old brick and dark, heavy wood with a yard manicured within an inch of its growth. Calling it a townhouse didn’t do the place justice either, as it took up half the block and presumably went back as far. “What’s a former marine doing in a place like that?”

“Good question.” Scotty handed over more reports. “The place belongs to a holding company, but we can’t get behind the front to find who’s pulling the strings. Miranda’s working her magic, but it may take a day or two.”

“Have either you or Doughty managed to dig up anything on the Lions of God?” That any charges had been brought, let alone stuck, was unlikely, but they needed anything they could get.

Scotty shook her head. “Nothing as of yet. But when God’s on your side, you can pretty much get away with murder so long as your coffers are full.”

“That’s rather jaded, Detective.”

“Catholicism does that to you.”

“All right, keep me posted.” He handed her back the

documents.

“Sure thing, Lieutenant. I’ll let you get back to fantasizing about your boss.” The rest of the day passed without incident, save the occasional wicked smirk from Scotty’s direction. Carver had probably put her up to the entire thing. Although she was quite capable of mischief on her own.

As David drove up to his house that night, he saw Carver in the back yard, busy at the grill. Steaks, take two.

David sidled up behind him, wrapping his arms around Carver’s chest. “If you ever mention Montgomery and sex in the same sentence again, I’ll punish you so hard you won’t sit right for a week.”

He felt rather than heard Carver’s laugh. “Doesn’t sound like much of a disincentive.” Risking the neighbors, Carver twisted his neck around to claim a quick kiss.
